How my journey began
When we decided that we wanted to start planning for a baby, I honestly did not know much about pre pregnancy care. About a year before we planned to conceive, my husband’s cousin spoke to me about it and suggested visiting a doctor at least three months before trying. That was the first time I learned that there were a few things we could do beforehand to prepare.
Around the same time, I also started paying more attention to my lifestyle. I looked more closely at my diet, added more nourishing foods and dry fruits, and made regular movement part of my routine through walking and cycling. These were simple changes, but I wanted to prepare myself as well as I could.
About three months before we planned to conceive, I visited my gynecologist. He patiently explained the importance of routine blood tests and starting folic acid in advance. He also encouraged me to continue eating well and staying physically active, which reassured me that I was already moving in the right direction.
Once my test results came back normal, the doctor gave us the go ahead, and soon after, we conceived. Since then, whenever someone I know talks about planning for a baby, I always share how helpful it was for me to visit a doctor beforehand. Every body and every journey is different, so having your doctor guide you through what your body needs can make a real difference.
Preparing for Pregnancy: Why It Matters
-
Doctor Visits & Tests: Even if you feel completely healthy, visiting a doctor before pregnancy helps spot things you may not notice like vitamin deficiencies, thyroid issues, or minor infections that can affect conception. A simple consultation gives peace of mind and ensures your body is fully ready.
-
Folic Acid & Supplements: Folic acid is something your body needs before you get pregnant. It helps prevent birth defects that form very early, often before you even know you’re expecting. Starting it a few months in advance gives your body a healthy reserve.
-
Healthy Diet: Nutrition before pregnancy affects your baby’s very first cells. Eating foods rich in iron, calcium and folate helps both parents prepare their bodies to support a healthy pregnancy. For mothers, it strengthens the foundation for conception and for fathers, it improves overall fertility and energy. It is not about dieting, but about nourishing your body to its best.
-
Exercise & Fitness: Staying active helps the body adjust better during pregnancy and recover faster after birth. Gentle walks, stretching or yoga improve blood flow, strength and energy levels. For partners too, regular exercise supports hormonal balance, reduces stress and builds shared motivation for a healthy lifestyle together.
-
Lifestyle Prep: Making small lifestyle changes as a couple can make a big difference. Avoiding alcohol, smoking and excess caffeine helps improve fertility and creates a healthier environment for your baby. Managing stress through rest, mindfulness or even shared activities keeps both of you emotionally balanced and connected.
-
Emotional Readiness: Pregnancy brings changes in every way, emotional, physical and mental. Taking time to prepare together, talk openly about your hopes and fears and support each other through journaling or quiet conversations helps both of you enter this new phase with calm and confidence.
