Sickness & Recovery

Common Illnesses We Faced

  • Had fever, associated with vomiting and diarrhea from a stomach upset.

  • Experienced occasional colds, coughs, and runny noses.

  • Cold and cough usually improved within 3–6 days.

  • Vomiting settled within 1–2 days, and diarrhea within about 3 days.

Medicines & Essentials We Kept at Home

  • Thermometer

  • Nasal aspirator

  • Saline drops

  • Doctor-prescribed medicines for fever, cold, cough, diarrhea, constipation, and ear infections.

  • Whenever we travelled, I carried these essentials along with a valid prescription from her pediatrician.

Following the Doctor's Advice

  • Whenever she had fever, persistent cold, or cough, I usually consulted her pediatrician.

  • We were fortunate to have a doctor who prescribed only the medicines that were genuinely needed.

  • Most illnesses improved with simple treatment, rest, and hydration.

Giving Medicines Calmly

  • I never forced medicines or held her down.

  • I always spoke gently and gave medicines slowly.

  • I tried to make medicine time calm and stress-free.

  • As she grew older, she became comfortable taking medicines.

  • By around 18 months, she could even drink medicine from the measuring cup herself.

  • I believe this helped her develop a positive association with medicines rather than fear them.

What Helped During Recovery

  • Saline drops and a nasal aspirator for blocked noses.

  • Gum massage and clean sterilized teethers during teething.

  • Plenty of cuddles, comfort, and rest.

  • Warm water throughout the day.

  • Keeping the environment calm and allowing her body time to recover.

Food During Illness

  • During vomiting and diarrhea, I preferred offering very light foods such as rice porridge (congee) and plenty of fluids.

  • During colds, coughs, and runny noses, I generally continued her regular meals.

  • I focused on hydration, warm water, and ensuring she was eating comfortably without forcing food.

Sleep & Comfort

  • Used saline drops before bedtime when her nose was blocked.

  • Cleared her nose to help her sleep more comfortably.

  • Offered extra cuddles, comfort, and reassurance.

  • Prioritized rest and sleep during recovery.

What We Learned

  • Most childhood illnesses improve with patience, rest, hydration, and proper medical guidance.

  • Staying calm helps both the child and the parent.

  • Comfort, cuddles, and quality sleep play a big role in recovery.

  • Creating a positive experience around medicines can make future illnesses much less stressful.

About Mamalogue

Mamalogue is a personal blog created from my own pregnancy and early motherhood journey, shaped by the routines I followed, the research I did, and the lessons I learned as a first-time mom. It’s a calm, honest space where I share real experiences, simple tips, baby nutrition ideas, and product suggestions, with the hope of helping other mothers feel supported. Everything here is based on what worked for me and is shared as personal experience, not medical advice, in a soft, minimal style that reflects the peaceful side of motherhood.
